Waiting for the tube, I see a middle-aged woman on the platform, gesticulating wildly. "Another loony", I think, before I see the phone in her left hand. She is making a sign-language call. And suddenly it strikes me that there are people for whom 3G phones are not just a dick extension, but actually serve a practical purpose. Personally, I've always thought that not seeing people you talk to is a distinct advantage, but some people need the visual contact. Never thought of that...

I've actually seen some article early during the deployment of UMTS hailing it as the rescue for all deaf people due to the possibility of cheap signlanguage calls.

Ny Teknik, late last year. Deaf people were very happy to have a mode of mobile communication that wasn't abusing an asynchronous protocol...
