It seems that Windows 98½ (also known as Windows ME) has some use after all. After I wiped the HD and installed ME, I got the integrated sound card working. All games I wanted to run seem to run, even if Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds quit without warning. (And Discworld II has had me laughing out loud quite a few times (e.g. the vampire, the Suffrajester, and "It's not a bug, it's an undocumented creature"). If I have any complaints, it might be that I think Ponder Stibbons has been a bit shortchanged, transformed from one of the very few sensible faculty members to a rather stereotypical mad scientist.)
Went into town for a shopping expedition, and came home with a new battery for the iBook, a new battery for the iMac I'm fixing, a new 200GB hard disk, 250 g of a nice Ceylon tea, and the second three Depeche Mode single boxes (for 169 SEK each).
