2. Brian Stableford: Rhapsody in Black (1973)
Cynical star pilot Grainger stumbles around underground and gets drafted for a revolution.

Stableford has a background in biology and sociology, and it shows here: the glimpses we get of the underground religious community and the native ecosystems are very interesting. Pity that the book is far too short, more of a novella than a novel, to explore this world; I sometimes get the feeling that most of the worldbuilding has been left on the cutting room floor, as it were. (On further research, my hunch that this is a part of a longer series was correct. You probably have to read the first part to understand this one fully.) As an outline, it's interesting; as part of a series, it might work (I haven't read the rest). As a standalone novel, it's not bad, reasonably well-written, but still not enough.
