15. Bryan Talbot, adapted by Mark Wright: The Adventures of Luther Arkwright (2005; comic 1978-1989)

Luther Arkwright is the only person alive with the ability to travel between parallel universes by force of will, a power that comes in handy when the destabilising forces known as "the Disruptors" influence the different parallels. The disturbance centers on a world where the English Civil War has continued until the 1980s, and Lord Protector Nathaniel Cromwell rules England with an iron fist...

An adaptation of Bryan Talbot's graphic novel. David Tennant plays a very different role from the Doctor: Luther is a much harder character, colder, more violent. Of course you recognise the voice, but it's only in a few moments of great frustration that he sounds like his later, more famous role. (And, of course, one of his three lovers is called Rose — we get to see three of her, telempathically linked, in different parallel universes.)
The adaptation is well done, but quite a few changes had to be made for a non-visual medium. For example, at the resolution of the story, Luther is now telepathically linked to several Roses: this is probably to give him someone to describe the surroundings to. Also, some minor characters have been merged or removed completely — for example Hiram Kowalsky, the American journalist, is completely gone. (That's going to make it very hard to adapt the sequel Heart of Empire, belike.)
