3. Princess Mononoke (もののけ姫 Mononoke Hime, 1997)

Seen with [livejournal.com profile] darnia on April 13, right after Kiki's Delivery Service.

Ashitaka, last prince of the hidden Emishi tribe, journeys out into the world to try and find a cure for a curse that will kill him, and maybe to find out what fired an iron ball into the boar god Nago and turned him into a raging demon.

It is refreshing to see a movie where even the main villain is basically a good person. The conflict is violent, sometimes very graphically so, but there is no clear black and white: the different parties are all working for what they think is right. While San and her wolf family are the protagonists, they are also rash, violent, and hard to reason with. Lady Eboshi is the main antagonist; sometimes ruthless, she can also be kind and compassionate (see, for example, her treatment of the lepers, and the way she genuinely cares for her ironworkers). It's not as much a question of good vs. evil, but rather two opposing forces (man vs. nature spirits) who are both doing what they think is necessary to survive; in the end, you can't say that one side is completely right and the other is completely wrong.

The ending, without revealing too much, is a happy one, but not sugary: many brave humans and animals have died, many things have changed or are lost forever, but there is still hope that all involved can build something better.
