Oiva Juntunen is a small-time crook who has spent the last five years living in luxury after a successful heist. Now one of his old partners in crime, former retail engineer and multiple murderer Hemmo Siira, is about to get out of prison, and wants his share of the originally 48 kgs of pure Australian gold (now down to 36 kgs). So Juntunen does the only decent thing: running away as far into the wilderness of northern Finland as he can go, where he meets and strikes up a companionship with Sulo Remes, an alcoholic Major in the Finnish army on a one-year leave of absence. Together they settle in a woodman's barracks a day's travel from the nearest village. But with all these people running around in the wild, is it far enough from the vengeful Hemmo Siira?

I liked this a lot better than The Year of the Hare. The humour is blacker, the protagonists have some dimensions (whereas Vatanen was just a name without a lot of personality who wandered around and did things), the non-plot has a running theme.
