Cordelia Naismith of the Betan survey accidentally meets with the notorious Aral Vorkosigan, a.k.a. "the Butcher of Komarr". She soon learns that Vorkosigan is not the cold, brutal warrior she has always heard, and within a year, she has fought against him in a rather nasty interplanetary war, defected to his side after the war, and become the Lady Vorkosigan.
Soon after the wedding, the dying Emperor Ezar Vorbarra drops his last bomb: his son Serg died in the war against Escobar, so when Ezar dies (any day now) his four-year-old grandson Gregor will be Emperor. Gregor needs a Regent until he comes of age, and Aral is the only one Ezar knows doesn't want the throne for himself. Aral accepts, as there is no way he can refuse.
And then all hell breaks loose.
