1. Robert Asprin: Another Fine Myth (1978)

When the down-on-his-luck magician Garkin wants to impress his young apprentice Skeeve, he prepares a spell to summon up a demon from another world. Unfortunately, as soon as the spell is complete, Garkin is dead with a crossbow quarrel in his chest, and Skeeve is left with his dead master, a likewise dead assassin and a green, scaly demon. To his relief, the demon's reputation of viciousness and bloodthirst was just Garkin's sales pitch to make the summoning more impressive; while Aahz is decidedly grumpy, under the scaly exterior he is rather friendly.
One snag is that Aahz, a magician himself, has been robbed of his magical power by Garkin's spell (which doesn't much improve his temper), and Garkin can't lift it, what with being inconsiderately dead and all. But even if he cannot do it himself until the spell has been neutralised, he still knows how to use magic, and so he takes Skeeve on as an apprentice — because the other assassins in the team sent to Garkin are still on the loose, and so is the mad magician who hired them, and Skeeve needs to learn more about magic pretty damn quickly...

Entertaining fluff, thankfully not very heavy on bad puns (except for the title). The only thing I found mildly annoying is Skeeve's very fast progress in learning magic and dealing with people, but then again this is not a book for deep character portraits. (No room for it, for a start.) Also, while Skeeve is obviously intelligent and a quick learner, he is no genius and sometimes survives only by sheer luck; otherwise he would have been an unbearable Gary Stu.

They quickly get more and more annoying and Gary Stu-ish, in my humble opinion. I read the first 10 [1] before giving up; I will gladly donate them to you if you believe you would appreciate them more than I do.

Unless you already got the complete series, that is...
