I read in Stockholm City today that Stellan Skarsgård is playing King Hrothgar in the coming film Beowulf & Grendel. The female main character, Selma, is played by one Sarah Polley I don't think I've ever heard of, and she may well be a good actress for all I know. There's only one thing that puzzles me: I admit I haven't read Beowulf in many years, but I remember no Selma. In fact, I don't remember any woman in Beowulf, unless you count Grendel's mother, and she looks a bit too young and beautiful to play a centuries-old troll. I will not be surprised if Selma is a completely new character and Beowulf's love interest...
A bit further down I see that the coming filmatisation of The War of the Worlds is produced by Steven Spielberg and will have Tom Cruise in it. Ugh. Well, at least it will draw from the book and not from the 1953 movie.
