My poor iBook (Dual USB, 500 MHz, late 2001) is not at all well. Unless I'm very very careful when repositioning the display, it will give out: I get a whiteout, or sometimes a garbled display, and then it locks up. Sometimes I can't even restart it. If I can bring it alive tonight, I'm copying everything essential off it onto another machine, either the PC or the Tangerine iMac. I need a working computer to sync my Palm and mobile phone with...

The most probable explanation is that the cables running through the hinges are worn out. It seems to be a common problem, due to bad engineering that was, ironically, probably more expensive and difficult to accomplish than doing it right. Add to this that I've lugged it around just about everywhere for three years, and I am not surprised it's getting a bit worn. Perhaps I ought to put it out to graze soon and get a new one.

On the other hand, between December 2001, when I bought the iBook, and when I left in January this year, $OLD_BOSS went through two laptop PCs (one Compaq and one HP).
