Miles is forced, by a heartbroken Simon Illyan, to resign from ImpSec after falsifying a report in an attempt to conceal his post-cryo-revival seizures. His "lie-now-fix-it-later" philosophy, which served Admiral Naismith so well in the past, is no longer useful: in fact it helped put him in this situation. Depressed, Miles tries to adjust to life as a civilian, but he is torn from his regret when Illyan himself starts acting strange...

Another character-driven Bujold novel, with elements of a detective story, in which the lives of many change forever — for better, for worse, or just for something different.
