When going through all my books to enter them on LibraryThing, I found a little volume I bought at a sale many years ago, had a quick look at and promptly forgot. Now I remember why.

One of my co-workers shared a link with us today. This is a valuable lesson in why you should never use text in a language you don't understand.

Idag skickade jag följande feedback till Samsungs svenska kundtjänst:
Bästa Samsung! )

SUMMARY IN ENGLISH:
A mail to Samsung's Swedish customer support, complaining about the horrible linguistic quality of the documentation for the DVD-HD870 DVD player.

Spectacular misreading of the day: "vegemite on toast" > "vengeance on toast". I know revenge is a dish best served cold, but as a sandwich spread?

Telenor sent me a new pet yesterday: a Sony Ericsson W810i. I don't expect ever to find much use for the Walkman functionality or even the FM radio, but the rest of the phone seems like a worthy replacement for my aging T610.

I just got home from Avenue Q. Absolutely brilliant production, well translated and played; after a while I hardly even noticed the puppeteers. An evening well spent, even if I didn't get the company I had hoped for.
And the Bad Idea Bears were just adorable. And just a tiny bit creepy.

Funny and completely irrelevant observation, which I picked up from a multi-lingual reference spreadsheet for a recent project: Turkish seems to have borrowed many of its terms for communications technology from French, as evidenced by words like "frekans", "mesaj" and "hoparlör".

This afternoon I used the word "batshittiest" in a comment to one of [livejournal.com profile] thette's posts, because I thought it sounded better than "most batshit". Out of curiosity I tried to google some various forms and derivations:

batshitest: 0 hits (hardly surprising)
batshittest: 0 hits
batshittiest: 46 hits
batshitter: 147 hits
batshitosity: 1 hit
batshititude: 4 hits

I find it telling and slightly amusing that one of the first hits on "batshittiest" is a review of one of Ann Coulter's books. The only surprise, though is that "batshitter" is apparently mostly used as a disparaging term for young and unusually stupid goths, where I would have thought it meant "someone who is batshit" (or maybe "collector of bat guano"). You learn something new every day.

Today, with the launch of the new iPod shuffle, the last Apple hardware device where I was directly involved in the translation (i.e. the old shuffle, where I translated and DTP:d the Swedish manual and parts of the packaging) has been retired. Of course my translations (like those by [livejournal.com profile] jophan, [livejournal.com profile] tuwr, [livejournal.com profile] sunjan and [livejournal.com profile] kjn, some of which I based mine on) will be recycled, paraphrased and reused for as long as Apple keep localising their stuff. I suppose it counts as immortality, after a fashion.

EDIT: Nice thoughts to my old co-workers, who must have had (and probably are still having) a hellish day today. When I talked to [livejournal.com profile] thette this morning, she said it is quite obvious that I am happy to be out of there, even a year and a half after I quit...
