34. Jacqueline Rayner: Doctor Who and the Pirates, or, the Lass that lost a Sailor (2003)

Evelyn and the Doctor visit Sally, one of Evelyn's students, and tell her a swashbuckling story about pirates. Although there seems to be more to the story than just a jolly adventure...

Enjoyable, and I laughed out loud a few times, but the way both the framing story and the narrative within the narrative oscillate between comedy and tragedy (and of course, the way we snap back and forth between the frame and the story) was a bit disorienting. It all comes together in the end, but I don't blame anyone for losing patience along the way.

The musical section halfway through is hysterically funny, though, and the Doctor's parade number "I Am The Very Model Of A Gallifreyan Buccaneer" (which is brilliant, at least the first few times you hear it) is introduced with the best cliffhanger ever: "Oh no, you are going to sing..."
